If the past 2+ years have taught us anything, it is that there is a critical need for better mental health services in our country. The stress, feelings of isolation, and uncertainty brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic caused many to come to terms with their personal mental health struggles, and did a lot to break down the stigma around seeking help. Etna is fortunate to have a new counseling center setting up shop at Emmanuel Lutheran Church that is providing low cost counseling services to community members.
Anchorpoint Counseling Ministry was established in 1966 in the North Hills communities of Pittsburgh. It was established as a faith-based organization, but Executive Director Mark Heinbockel is explicit in his explanation that faith does not have a role in the counseling services unless requested by recipients. The counseling center is welcoming to all faiths, backgrounds, and orientations, and simply operates under the tenet, "love your neighbor." Recently, the organization has been expanding services to under-resourced communities to break down barriers to care such as transportation and healthcare coverage. The recommended price of a session is just $10, and staff will work with participants on a price that works for them. He shared:
“At Anchorpoint, we believe all community members should have access to high-quality mental health care. The Etna Community Counseling Center removes common barriers to counseling by offering affordable and conveniently located services in Etna. In this time of increased needs, please know that the Etna Community Counseling Center is here to help you and your family navigate the challenges of life.”
Mr. Heinbockel underscored that people should seek care for a variety of reasons such as anxiety, grief, relationship issues, and stress. Mental health care is an important part of everyone's overall health. A person does not need mental health services only if they have a diagnosed mental health disorder. Mental health care should be seen as routine care needed for a healthy life. Unfortunately, not enough emphasis has been placed on the importance of mental health care, and not enough access to services has been provided in our healthcare system.
The Etna Community Counseling Center is located at Emmanuel Lutheran Church at 66 Grant Avenue. All are welcome to schedule an appointment to speak with a counselor at 412-366-1300. Anchorpoint Counseling Ministry also offers a variety of programs such as tutoring, couples counseling, and more. You can learn more about the organization here.
